Kerri Sheila Art + Design

Posted by Lydia Shoffner on

Hi Lovelies!

Today we would like to introduce you to our sweet friend Kerri of Kerri Sheila Art + Design! She is an amazing watercolor artist and is launching a new, limited-edition series of art prints, greeting cards, and a 2018 poster calendar of her original watercolor paintings in her Etsy shop this week. This botanical and landscape series is inspired by her deep love for nature - its beauty and complexity. Several of the pieces were inspired by Kerri’s trip home to East Coast Canada this summer, where she spent a lot of time on the beach and in nature. Several of the plants species are rare or endangered, such as Painted Trillium, Middlemist Red (print and calendar) and Gingko Biloba.

Meet Kerri!

I am a self-taught artist based in Montreal. I paint in my home studio along side my lovely studio assistant, Lucy, my rescue Chihuahua Terrier mix. My work is inspired by the beauty and complexity of the natural world, botanicals, and geometric patterns. My love for nature, my background in natural science along with my experiences and impressions traveling, and navigating everyday life have informed my aesthetic.

Watercolor is my chosen medium because I love its immediacy of expression through color, texture and brush strokes.

I enjoy painting still lifes/in nature, as well as working from photos and designing patterns.

I create and offer fresh original watercolor art, art prints and stationery to add vibrancy and joy to your life and home.

Q & A with Kerri

When did you first start creating?

I started creating when I was a little kid (my grandmother has a collection of drawings I made of people with rainbow colored hair when I was 3. I'm pretty they were inspired by the cartoon, Jem, which was my favorite show at the time). I was always drawing and painting. I was a very hyper kid and making art and crafts was really the only thing that enabled me to settle down and focus.

How do you get inspired?

I get inspired a few ways... By walking in nature, a park and/or travelling, especially to places with unique flora and fauna (I recently visited Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii).
I also get inspired music and certain colors or color schemes, photos, the work of others…

What environment do you like to work in?

I like to work in quiet, bright space, surrounded by pieces of art and objects that inspire me or make me happy.

Who are some of your biggest influences, artistically or personally?

My biggest artistic influences these days are Yao Cheng, Pink and Salt, Lisa Congdon and Creative Ingrid.

What are you currently working on?

I am currently working on floral pieces with a lot a movement and vibrancy. I've been using Royal Talens liquid watercolor which I find so inspiring and so much fun to work with because it's so hyper-pigmented. I also have some ideas for some pieces inspired by geometric patterns. These will all eventually become available as prints and stationery I'm sure :)

What are your plans for the near future?

To continue to make new work. I'm thinking of putting out a notebook or possibly a series of them. I'm also thinking that I'd like to do a bit of commissioned work and even collaborate with other artists. However, I will have to pace myself a little bit in doing so shortly as my partner and I are expecting are first child in December :) This is will surely affect my routine and schedule for a certain period of time. However, I intend to create when I can as it is very important to me.

What are you doing when you’re not creating?

When I'm not creating art, I'm making music with my partner, Rich (we have a band called Traces), walking Lucy, going to the farmer's market, walking in nature or at least in a park, riding my bicycle around the city, drinking delicious coffee with friends, reading, travelling and watching movies and tv series (I just finished S3 of Narcos!).
