Artist Spotlight: JL of Somewear in Tyme

This month, we had the pleasure of chatting with JL, the creative force behind Somewear in Tyme, a unique jewelry and accessories brand that blends modern alternative style with nostalgic influences and celestial charm. From gemstone-studded ravens to restored vintage combs, JL’s work is a beautiful reminder that jewelry can be both wearable art and deeply personal storytelling.
Meet the Artist JL began creating at a young age and was lucky enough to take a high school course in metalsmithing and lost wax casting—a formative experience that ignited a lifelong love of jewelry-making. Though she no longer works with metal, JL continues to explore her creativity using a range of mediums like gemstones, wood, resin, and vintage findings. Her pieces are deeply inspired by nature, the stars, and the elegance of the Victorian era.
"I find a lot of my inspiration in nature," she says, "and who doesn't love a good walk? I also find inspiration in the galaxy and times past."

How Somewear in Tyme Was Born The name Somewear in Tyme came from JL's love of puns, herbs, and one of her favorite movies. With a playful spirit and a clear vision, she transformed her passion into a full-time creative business when she moved to Oregon.
Her style? Timeless, unusual, and beautiful.
The Creative Process JL’s creative process is fluid. "Some days I know exactly what is going to happen, and I can grab supplies and go from there. Lately, it's trying out new and different combos and colors I wouldn't have thought about putting together."
Each day starts with selecting the materials she feels drawn to—a habit paired with another important ritual: tea or water always nearby.

Signature Pieces Among her favorite creations are the beaded raven gemstone necklace and a restored art deco feathered hair comb—two pieces that embody her love of history, symbolism, and bold design.
On the Importance of Handmade "You get a bit of heart, soul, and emotion with handmade pieces," JL says. "That isn't something that can be replicated by AI or machine."
Her work carries messages of self-acceptance and individuality. "You don’t have to hide," she says. "You can be proud of being colorful and uniquely you."

The Ups and Downs of the Artist's Life While JL now runs her business full-time, it wasn’t always easy. “Getting my business to be taken seriously was a challenge. I overcame it by working on myself and allowing creativity to guide me.”
She’s experienced creative burnout too. Her advice? "There’s a fine line between pushing through and knowing when to rest. Some days you only brainstorm. Other days, you create one piece. And that’s okay."
Looking Ahead JL is currently working on new tea strainers, hair pieces, and jewelry, with hopes of incorporating embroidery into her offerings. Her dream projects include a large skull necklace and a chain headpiece crown.

When She’s Not Creating... You’ll find her gardening, reading, or watching TV. And fun fact: JL used to work in a bead shop, so she’s picked up a wide range of crafting skills along the way.
Words to New Artists "It's going to be a roller coaster. Patience and perseverance will get you through a lot."

Favorite Collaborator JL loves working with her sister, Nina, who runs Sweet Skull of Nine on Etsy.
